About Dave Smith
Dr. Smith received the Ph.D. in
solid state physics from M.I.T. in 1980. He worked in ring laser navigation research for four years and then, at the divestiture
of AT&T in 1984, joined the research arm of the Baby Bells, Bellcore, later renamed to Telcordia. His expertise was electrically-controlled
optical devices, primarily for fiber-optic networks applications. His research included bith device technology and systems
demionstrations. Starting in 1993, Dave Smith spent several years as a tenured, chaired full professor in the electrical engineering
department at Case Western reserve University. In 2000, he cofounded Movaz Networks, a fiber network component and systems
supplier (ultimately acquired by ADVA). After 2001, he continued teaching and began consulting in the field of optics and
electronics, providing design and technical management services to small businesses as well as providing patent litigation
